Hypes, i hate them. Everything underground is going mainstream, while the true meaning is lost.
I just felt like sharing my thoughts over the current hype, called JDM.
I remember seeing a video about some guys tuning their civics, these guys where the originators.
They imported parts from japan, because the US aftermarket was really shitty, and had hardly any parts for their B16's. So they bought all these badass parts from Spoon, Mugen, J's racing. And they paid big bucks for it, but they didnt mind, cause it was all in mind of performance. Those guys where living the true JDM spirit, buying parts because they wanted the best of the best, to get the most out of their little 1.6 engines. This was back in '98 i think.
Nowadays, all i see is people buying so called "JDM" parts, and paying big money for them, just because they come from japan. Fenders, blinkers, headlights, taillights, all parts that are virtually identical to both USDM and EDM parts. People converting their LHD cars to RHD, just so they can be "JDM".
Almost every EG civic(5th gen) i see has the stock clear blinkers replaced with aftermarket "JDM" orange blinkers.
That shit is NOT JDM. Hell, they dont even do that in japan, cause guess what colour they have over there?
Thats right! They are clear, just like the EDM blinkers.
I can appreciate a good quality part, but not everything has to be OEM, or JDM. I bought a Nardi steeringwheel a while ago, it cost me 230 euros. Thats quite a lot of money, but its worth it. And a used OEM/JDM steeringwheel will cost at least that, if not more.
Instead of buying a used Type-R bumperlip for 300 euros, i bought a new one, knockoff, for 120 euros.
My point being: JDM parts are overpriced. If you want to be "JDM" at all costs, prepare to bend over and lube up. Cause its going to be painful. Paying more than new, to be something that you are not.
I do not have respect for these people, nor do i envy them. I pity them. Throwing away your money to be "popular". Just until the next bandwagon comes along, and they have to be part of that aswell.
Dont jump on the bandwagon, do your own thing. Eventhough my car be in the style of the "JDM" cars, thats only because i chose parts that dont mess up the look of the car, but improve it. The parts that i buy are the parts that i like, not because somebody else likes them. I drove around for 5 months with yellow 14" rims.
Why? Because i dont care what other people think, and at the time, i thought it was funny. Still, when i see the pictures, it doesnt look bad. Only a few people liked it, and it gave me a LOT of looks on the road, usually disaproving.
I just thought of something. JDM style is becoming rice. Hell, maybe it already is.

I think we can state that JDM = overrated. On the other hand I reckon we are "JDM", not because of the parts we buy or the way we make our cars look like but because we do our own thing.
So... hmm... maybe there's JDM on 2 levels? Or maybe we aren't JDM but just hella cool because we do our own thing and don't mind the JDM craze all that much.
Anyway, I do know what you mean and I fully agree. I remember being at a company that imports cars from Japan. The owner told me that people would pay up to 75 euros for the flares that Skylines have on the passenger side, just because those things are "JDM".

My car's Grill, Spoiler and Badge are JDM import but as skipper said, i bought them because i like them. If they where USDM i still would have gotten them.

you're right its all just a hype. only thing truly JDM on my car are my headlights as they are OEM ones from the 96-98 subaru legacy GT-B.
If anything my next car will be UKDM, as i'll try to get as many Prodrive parts as I can haha

A lot of people in the scene at the moment modify cars for all the wrong reasons...
Myself, I was always into cars. When I was still a little man I helped my grandpa, who had restored oldtimers for as long as I can remember, by handing him tools and stuff. Every single night they had to wash me for like half a hour to get all the dirt and oil off. When I was 6 years old I was welding my dads beer caps on my little pedalcar, but sadly at that age the situation between my parents got so bad I lost contact with that side of the family (they where divorced when I was like two years old). 20 years would pass before I´d see them again, so my welding skills are still limited to welding beercaps onto stuff, lol... however, they are still going to try and teach me
My mom´s side of the family wasn't into cars at all, which is a shame really since it was not till my 17th that I got to work on cars and stuff again, this is when I got my first car which was a Mazda 626 and I had this real strong urge to take it apart, clean it, and improve on it in general. Gene´s doing their job? My mom was really scared I would ruin that car and she kept telling me to leave it alone
Of course I didn't take her advise and she was quite surprised with the result afterwards. The car was still functioning properly and had grown from a LX into an almost full option GLX. I did sell that car a bit too soon really, but I got an opportunity I couldn't let pass and with the next cars that came I went a bit further every time. Nowadays I only see a garage when I need to get my AC serviced or for the APK.
I´m into cars just because they fascinate me. I love to work on ´em as much as I like to drive ´em. Especially when life is being a bitch like it sometimes can, I really can get my head clear by just putting on my old clothes and get myself dirty from oil and grease.
Most of the bandwagon hoppers are into cars just because it´s cool, to get in the ´scene´ and to get layed.

But i totally agree with you, i love cars, and working on cars, because i love the technical side behind it, and i love improving that and learning more and more about how it all works.
If others like my car,or what im doing to it, thats just a bonus
